HC Cuba, short for Hemianthus callitrichoides ‘Cuba’, is one of the most iconic carpeting plants in the aquascaping hobby. Native to Cuba, this tiny-leaved plant is prized for its ability to create dense, vibrant green carpets that resemble rolling fields or miniature meadows beneath the water’s surface.

Its delicate appearance and bright colour have made it a favourite among aquascapers, terrarium enthusiasts, and nature-inspired artists. When grown successfully, HC Cuba creates a sense of scale and depth that transforms ordinary containers into living landscapes.

Why We Love HC Cuba

At Buiscape, we’re fascinated by the way plants can transform a simple glass vessel into a living work of art.

HC Cuba embodies many of the qualities we look for in great design:

• Fine texture that creates visual depth

• A vibrant green colour that brings energy to a composition

• A natural carpeting growth pattern

• The ability to create a sense of scale and perspective

• Endless creative possibilities in both aquatic and terrestrial environments

Whether used in aquascaping, paludariums, terrariums, or experimental plant displays, HC Cuba encourages us to slow down, observe nature, and appreciate the beauty found in small details.

Signs of Healthy HC Cuba

The nicest HC Cuba (Hemianthus callitrichoides ‘Cuba’) carpet usually looks like soft green moss from far away and tiny clover leaves up close. Healthy HC Cuba should look like a dense, low, bright green carpet with tiny round leaves and compact growth.

Signs of Healthy HC Cuba are:

  • Bright fresh green color

Not pale yellow, transparent, brown, or grey.

  • Tiny compact leaves

Leaves should stay small and close together.

  • Dense horizontal growth

It should creep outward across the substrate instead of growing tall.

  • Visible runners

Healthy HC sends little horizontal stems under or along the substrate and fills gaps.

  • Firm attachment

When established, gentle water flow shouldn’t lift sections.

  • Pearling (optional, not required)

Tiny oxygen bubbles on leaves after lights come on can happen under strong growth conditions.
